My Red Bank, New Jersey mission trip experience was composed of fellow University of Cincinnati students from Collegiate Ministries and H2O Church. We came together as a group bound on serving Hurricane Sandy flood victims in the Red Bank, New Jersey area. The experience entailed a week-long commitment, March 14th to the 21st in 2015, to do hands-on labor such as cleaning and painting a church, laying gravel, and leveling dirt and mud.
The most significant part of the experience was to be able to fellowship with other college students, many of which I had not met before the trip. I had the pleasure of meeting a great group of Collegiate Ministry people and had the opportunity to get to connect deeper with my H20 Church community. Together, we were able to help the affected victims that lacked money to recover on their own. If I was ever in such a dire situation, I would appreciate the work that we did. In immeasurable ways, the New Jersey experience went above and beyond my initial expectations. I made many friends and memories that week that I will want to remember.
The Red Bank, New Jersey experience impacted my development in several ways. Throughout the course of a week, I was able to make a difference in people’s lives and my own in ways I had never imagined. Thus, through outreach on the trip, I made major progress with my faith and personal relationship with God. With regards to my career choice, although I have no desire to pursue ministry, I realized I must be passionate about my job. Regarding work, if I expect good results, I have to be as committed as I was on this trip.
Since I had already been on four previous mission trips, I was not new to the community benefits of mission work. However, my view of community has completely changed as a result from this trip. Community is created not by what you get, but what you give. Obviously, community is about many people and not solely yourself. However, having a mentality centered on others and their needs is a lot easier said than done. With that respect, this trip helped me to put things into a healthier perspective. Therefore, in the future, going forward, I will definitely try to apply the knowledge I have learned about community awareness.
This trip helped me further understand the importance of service no matter what career I choose. Unexpectedly, this trip actually acted as a great way to minister to my non-Christian friends on campus. Returning from spring break, the majority of my friends and I shared our spring break activities with each other. Thus, I had the opportunity to share God with them through my impactful New Jersey experience.
