Studio all'estero a Scuola di Amministrazione Aziendale, Universita degli studi di Torino
(Study abroad at SAA School of Business and Management, University of Torino)
My experience involved a 16 week study abroad in Torino, Italy attending Scuola Di Amministrazione Aziendale Università degli studi di Torino (SAA School of Business and Management, University of Torino). While abroad I had classes four days a week and traveled around half of Italy. I took 19 credit hours of the following courses: Intercultural Communications; Business Leadership, Management, and Teamwork; International Marketing; Elementary Italian 1 and 2; Viticulture Business Field Study; and Cuisine.
I learned how to live independently in a foreign country whose language was different from any I already knew, and was able to communicate almost fluently in Italian. I also became accustomed to how academics are taught in a different environment, as well as adapt to any situation I came across. By embracing my study abroad experience, I can incorporate my learning and growth in areas of my life. Since I acknowledge that the experience happened, I am able to have a heightened intercultural perspective, sensitivity, and awareness.
In the future, with the increasing global economic environment, such awareness of other societies will contribute beneficially to my success. With this, I shall be able to communicate well with others from around the world. My study abroad experience was full of hardships and the craziness that is learning to live in another country, but I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Studying in Torino has made me a better person and has become an integral part of who I am today. My Italian experience prepared me for the future by giving me a taste of working with people of culturally different backgrounds. Additionally, my eyes have been opened to the vast world which lies beyond Ohio – a world of gelato, vino, pasta, piazzas, Trenitalia, and so much more!
This past semester, I utilized my Torino Girl Blog (www.torinogirl.weebly.com) as a medium to share my study abroad experience on a week to week basis. This blog was a very meaningful way to document my involvement by allowing myself, friends, and family not to miss a moment. I posted these weekly updates as a way of demonstrating self-accountability for my time spent in Italy. By expressing myself in a way that words cannot, and going by the old proverb that a picture is worth a thousand words, my blog is an invaluable reflection on my experience that I’m sure will grow even more precious to me when I look back on it later in life.
